Diagrama Foundation: residents at Cabrini House carve pumpkins for Halloween

Residents at Cabrini House had fun with their Halloween preparations when they visited a pick your own pumpkin farm recently.

Joining droves of families at the popular farm in Hoo, Kent, they fastened coats and turned collars up against the chilly wind of the clearing. They followed the crowds ferrying their own wheelbarrows through well-worn fields.

Their efforts were rewarded with a celebration of pumpkin patches littered with orange rounds as far as the eye could see. They each went into the patch and had the chance to seek out their very own pumpkin among the vast selection in a variety of shapes and sizes.

With the wheelbarrow brimming with a successful haul, they returned to Cabrini House and were given support tackling the tradition of carving and designing their own individual pumpkins ready for Halloween.

They then set about turning the insides into ‘orange sludge’ - more commonly known as pumpkin soup!

On Halloween all the carved pumpkins were put on display ready for the evening. Staff helped residents to decorate all three homes and when families arrived in the evenings they were met by spooky ghouls and ghosts, and a few well-placed cobwebs and spiders.

Pumpkin soup and scary cakes were served for the spooky supper as well as sandwiches and witches brew. Eerie music and dimmed lights helped to create the perfect atmosphere for the ghouls and ghosts.

Michelle Dyne, residential manager said: “Everyone had a good time. The pumpkin picking is a great way for everyone to integrate with community activities and the carving helps them to be creative.

“The gathering was one of the family events that we hold each month for residents and families. We always encourage all the residents to get involved in some way, from taking part in making decorations and cards to cooking and baking cakes.

“The families appreciate the opportunity to get together and have a natter and the residents really enjoy the social aspect of the occasion.”

The next event at Cabrini House will be a ‘quiet’ firework display planned for November 6.
