Diagrama Foundation is looking for a volunteer artist

Adults with learning disabilities are on the hunt for a new volunteer artist to help lead them through the second stage of a ground-breaking European art project.

Cabrini House, Diagrama's home for adults with learning disabilities in Orpington, is taking part in the GALA (Gentle Art Living Art) project with organisations from four other countries.

To date, participants have been led by volunteer artist Sophie Bament who has introduced her keen students to a range of new materials including mosaics, pen and ink and charcoal during weekly sessions.

Sophie has been working on introducing the 'GALA' methodology developed by Groep Ubuntu in Belgium, which runs a ground-breaking art college for adults with learning disabilities in Kortrijk. Their artworks are exhibited across the world - http://www.kunstwerkplaatsdezandberg.be/over-ons

Residents have visited a festival in France this summer to experience a variety of workshops and gain inspiration for the next stage of the project. Watch their video to find out how they got on.

Helen Dean, head of projects at Diagrama Foundation said: “It’s great to see the project is having such a significant impact already – more residents are now participating in art activities and Sophie has also been able to help progress and realise some real talents among those taking part. It’s such a fantastic project to be involved with and a very rewarding role.

“We would like our next volunteer to continue with the art programme within Cabrini House, helping our residents and staff to create a legacy artwork and also assisting our friends at Groep Ubuntu with the project's final activity - an exhibition of artworks from all five European partners, which will be held at Rochester Cathedral next summer.

“If anyone is interested in this exciting opportunity, we would love to hear from them.”

Diagrama Foundation is a UK charity which supports children and adults at risk of social exclusion. It provides services and programmes to ensure individuals they work with have the most fulfilled lives possible within their capabilities.
